A complete re-stucco of a house or building is the best way to address not only problems of deterioration, but also of cosmetics. The advantage to a complete re-stucco is that the preparation and repair work is sealed under a color coat that allows for a more solid finished product without the look of a patch job.

The key to a successful and longer lasting re-stucco lies in the preparation and repair work. The better the procedure taken to repair and restore the structure or dwelling, the longer the finished product will last. The knowledge gained over the past 3 decades by those at Nurse Stucco will insure that the best procedures and products will be used to renovate prior to re-stuccoing.

The color coat process of a re-stucco can be accomplished with a cement based stucco or an acrylic stucco. Both products are very good and long lasting dependent upon the integrity of the preparation and repair work.

Cement based color coats are the most commonly used exterior finish products. Expo stucco is the major supplier of color stucco products in the San Diego area. Their colors are all of an earthen base and pre-mixed into each bag of stucco. Colored cement based stucco is designed to be applied over any cement substrate following proper preparation procedures.

Acrylic color coats are not cement based products, therefore, extra preparation procedures have to be taken to make this product compatible with all cement and stucco surfaces. While in many instances an acrylic finish coat can be a bit longer lasting than cement stucco, the product can also be problematic for certain jobs. Selecting the best re-stucco products to meet your specific re-stucco needs, rather than a one-size-fits-all re-stucco solution is a service that we provide to all Nurse Stucco customers.

What’s Involved in Re-coat and Re-Stucco?

How you approach a re-stucco project really depends largely on the existing exterior finish and what preparations are needed to establish a uniform substrate or ‘base”. Stucco is ONLY as strong as it’s substrate so any weakness or inconsistencies in the base will cause problems with the finish color coat. This is especially true when re-stuccoing over hand applied smooth stucco.

Your home re-stucco projects start with a careful evaluation of the wall surfaces to identify any areas needing repairs. Next we sandblast to clean and prepare the surface for the new stucco coat, removing about 1/8″ of the surface, and make any necessary repairs. Then we apply a thin coat of stucco called a brown coat (this would be step #2 in a 3-coat stucco application) to level out the surface of the walls. This leveling coat will cover any inconsistencies in the finish it’s covering, and it gives the walls a smooth texture for the final color coat. The finish (color coat) is thin, and gives your home it’s unique stucco texture and color.

Home Recolor Coating and Re-stucco

Stucco provides a durable and affordable alternative for the exterior of your home. Recolor coat and Re-stucco and stop worrying about stains, discoloration, nicks and dents and other imperfections brought about with time. Choose your texture of choice and allow Nurse Stucco to give your home or building an economical “face lift”.

You can recolor the stucco of the house. There are a couple of ways to go about it. You can apply a new finish coat that has integral color and a new texture, or you can apply an acrylic sealer/finish that contains pigments. The best option isusually a new finish with integral color and that will require cleaning the existing stucco well, applying an appropriate bonding agent and then applying a new finish coat in the color and texture the homeowner desires. With the acrylic, the procedure is similar. The surface needs to be cleaned and coated with an appropriate bonding agent and then the acrylic product needs to be sprayed, brushed or rolled on.

1) Texture – this is the stucco finish that is the easiest to apply and is what you see on most tract homes.

2) Sand finish – this is the smoothest and is considered the best for up-scale homes. You can vary the smoothness by the coarseness of the sand used.

3) Machine Dash – this is a modern adaptation of the old hand applied dash. It is usually used on commercial structures and has a very heavy rough appearance.

4) Knock Down Machine Dash – this is a variation on the machine dash finish where the plasterer follows up with a trowel down to “knock down” and flatten out the courseness of the dash.

There are as many finishes as there are stucco applicators, but these are the generally acknowledged finishes in use in San Diego.

Homeowners and San Diego home remodeling and home improvement contractors have been choosing Nurse Stucco to meet their recolor coat and restucco needs since day one, and the professionals at Nurse Stucco are San Diego residential recolor coat and restucco experts. If you’re considering a residential restucco (with or without color or texture changes), and the differences between natural stucco and synthetic stucco and the benefits of each, and would like more information about your options, consult the restucco experts at Nurse Stucco.

A Stucco  Technician For Any Size Job

Residential stucco repair and stucco patching are part science and part art…and both art and science are practiced daily by the highly skilled craftsmen at Nurse Stucco. In addition to the technical aspects of mixing the stucco components correctly, and applying the stucco to the area to be repaired or patched, the artistry comes into play with matching the exact texture to the surrounding areas, and blending the colors to render the repair invisible.

Stucco patching and stucco repairs are our specialty at Nurse Stucco. Exterior stucco is most vulnerable to water damage. You might be tempted to simply paint over cracks or stains on your stucco siding but those stains may indicate damage. If you suspect that you have damaged exterior stucco, call on Nurse Stucco for assistance. You can count on Nurse Stucco to do a thorough evaluation of the problem, and provide quality repairs.

Just because you can find home improvement magazine articles and YouTube videos showing you how to do DIY stucco repair doesn’t mean repairing stucco is a fast or an easy job. Repairing stucco is tricky because of its layered construction. Minor crack repair may be repaired at the surface with acrylic fillers as a DIY project, but most stucco repairs involve getting down to the substrate and repairing outward to the surface to make sure that the repaired surface will prevent unwanted water intrusion.

Stucco Patching Repair Experts

We do not apply a one-size-fits-all approach to patch cracks and repair holes in stucco surfaces. The Nurse Stucco specialists will check every inch of the house siding visually looking for stains, cracks and bulges. They will use a tapping method to locate soft or spongy areas. These are often found at the base of exterior walls. All of these symptoms indicate the need for patching or repair. They might also tell you that there is structural damage to the framework or materials underneath the stucco siding. This may require repairs to the structure itself before any repairs can be made on the stucco. Nurse Stucco will show you exactly where the damage is so that you can get the necessary repairs done before starting the stucco repair project. They will also be looking for the reasons for damage. For example there may be a need for improved rain water runoff and water diversion to prevent splashing on a lower stucco wall. They might also suggest some changes to gutters and down spouts.

Once your home is ready for the stucco repair, Nurse Stucco will amaze you with the high quality of the work performed. Our Nurse Stucco experts will create patched areas that will blend perfectly with your existing siding. Your home’s frame work and all other materials underneath your stucco siding will be protected from the elements. The stucco repair specialists from Nurse Stucco will make sure that the patch is done right the first time.,/p>

Building Commercial Success

General contractors of commercial construction projects know there is a huge difference between residential and commercial grade stucco contractors. The difference is experience, planning, resources, staffing, production, testing and certainly expectations. When building walls hundreds of feet long and high, it is imperative to construct straight courses, consistent grout lines and perfectly flat walls. Structural walls must be built exactly to plan utilizing bond beams, reinforced steel and concrete that meets architectural specifications. Commercial stucco contractors must posses the field experience to quickly create solutions to unforeseen field variances that the general contractor, architect and building owner are comfortable with, and that don’t delay production. We encourage you to forward your set of plans to Nurse Stucco Inc. for a quick proposal that will help make your project a success.

Nurse Stucco, Inc. has been serving San Diego’s  commercial and residential building contractors with quality new stucco installation of both traditional stucco and synthetic stucco (EIFS) since we first began, and are San Diego stucco specialists. We pride ourselves in our flexibility and the reliability that we provide to our contractors, and our proven track record speaks for itself.

General contractors, commercial property managers and homeowners associations choose Nurse Stucco Inc. for their commercial re-stucco and repair needs because of the quality of their work, their reliability to get the job done, and their integrity. What Is Fog Coat?

According to the Stucco Manufacturer’s Association (the world’s leading authority on the care and maintenance of Stucco), Fog Coat is a cement-based finish that in simple terms is stucco without the sand. It can be made in just about any stucco color (except the very darkest colors), and allows for patching, blending, freshening up, and re-coloring stucco.

Fog coating is the process that applies color to the original stucco while maintaining the porosity of the stucco. Fog coating is applied with a pneumatic sprayer, not unlike what you would think of as a paint sprayer. The nozzles are a bit different but otherwise fog coating looks like you are painting. Fog coating will adhere and bond to the original stucco texture and give the same or similar texture as what previously existed.

Why Fog Coating?

One of the big mistakes homeowners make with stucco homes is to paint them. Stucco was meant to breath and painting seals the stucco surface and it can’t breath so moisture can build up and create some secondary conditions, the least of which could be staining. Stucco finished homes are very common in San Diego, and Southern California. Stucco can come in many textures and patterns from a stippled sand texture to a troweled knocked down look. And when the stucco need freshening or a new finish, the first thing a homeowner thinks of is that the house needs painting.

The primary purpose of fog coating is to achieve walls of uniform color. The stucco fog coating process also allows for re-coloring stucco in addition to freshening up the existing color. Fog coating can also be used to overlay stains caused by dirt washed from roofs, discoloration due to soil clinging to and staining the base of walls and to cover non-removable efflorescence on the surface of newly-applied or aged plaster. Fog coating can be applied to any stucco texture, whether it be sand float, Spanish, brocade, dash or other.

Advantages Of Fog Coating

Fog coat is a more permanent and durable option than painting as fog coat becomes part of the underlying stucco, which never flakes, peels, or requires sandblasting. It’s an easy, economical, long-lasting application that can be matched to virtually any stucco color. So when it’s time to rejuvenate your stucco, applying fog coat is the smart solution.
